Treatment for Panic
Attacks and Agoraphobia
Ways to Treat Panic
Attacks from Agoraphobia
There are some people who have
been so overrun with panic attacks that they fear going out in
public. The knowledge that they might have a panic attack
imposes severe limitations on them. These people are said to suffer
from agoraphobia, or the fear of going into public
situations. Agoraphobia causes them to isolate
themselves, and in severe cases, to refuse to leave the
comfort of their own homes. They alter their life by
avoiding having to leave their home. They choose to obtain
everything they need over the phone or the internet or to
have friends or family make their purchases. This
condition lessens the quality of life for these
individuals, and they must seek ways to treat this
condition.

Medicine
One treatment for panic
attacks and agoraphobia is to take medication. There are
many on the market today that are used to treat panic attacks
from agoraphobia and other issues. Some of these are the
anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications which seem to
lessen the effects of the panic symptoms in most individuals
that have agoraphobia. Some of these drugs are Prozac,
Paxil, Xanax and Klonopin. One of the dangers of taking
these medications for a prolonged time is that it is difficult
to go off of them. Drug dependency can be as debilitating as
the actual panic attack.

A better and more stable
treatment for panic attacks caused by agoraphobia is through
some lifestyle changes and psychotherapy. For example,
caffeine and alcohol should not be taken by individuals that
have the symptoms of agoraphobia. Both caffeine and alcohol
have adverse effects on the body and mind. Caffeine
causes a stimulated system which is not conducive to
relaxation. Alcohol affects the mind's capacity to
process information and may cause more panic attacks for the
individual. In addition, if the person is taking any form of
medication, most anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications
have a warning about being mixed with alcohol.
Psychotherapy is a way to treat panic attacks caused by
agoraphobia since the therapists can help individuals to
process their fears and give them the tools that help them to
live in the outside world again. Once a patient
understands the root causes and triggers for the panic attacks,
he is usually well on his way to recovery. The therapist
will also give him relaxation methods to use to treat the panic
attacks that cause agoraphobia so that he can focus on relaxing
rather than the fear and panic attack. Initially, this
method is usually combined with medication so that the person
can practice safely and be relieved of some of the symptoms
until he gets stronger to function without the
medication.
